Portsmouth City School District announced the hire of Matthew McCorkle as district superintendent.
McCorkle began his career as a teacher at South Webster school in 1993, where he says he learned from excellent role models that helped set him off on the right foot. He was later hired as principal of Roosevelt Elementary for Portsmouth City Schools in 1999. After that, he continued his career working in other districts such as Ironton and Wheelersburg, and was hired as the school superintendent in Washington Courthouse. He left that position to be closer to his children in Scioto County, and took the job of high school principal at Green Local School District.
McCorkle will now return to Portsmouth City School District as superintendent, officially beginning Aug. 1, 2024, and he expects to hit the ground running.
“I felt like this is a spot where I can go in and I can make a difference with the kids and give all students the opportunity to be really successful. There’s a foundation of history and success in Portsmouth with the students in our schools, and I wanted to rekindle that and take it on the journey where we can be successful again,” McCorkle said.
As superintendent, he said he would like to provide accountability to his students, staff, and the community. He said he was ready for a new challenge in his life, but he will also miss the students and staff at Green Local School District.
“The district and the people I’ve worked with at Green have been awesome and they meant a lot to me. It’s a really great place and a great staff to be around. Hopefully, things will continue to grow and develop for them, and I look for good things in that district. It is important to recognize the people who have helped make it what it is, and I wouldn’t have this opportunity if it wasn’t for them,” McCorkle said.
